What Is Oriental Medicine?

Oriental Medicine (OM) refers to the ancient and modern practices of East Asian medicine that has been used to diagnose, treat, and prevent disease for more than 2,500 years.  It is a system designed to treat the whole person and not just the symptom.  OM incorporates Acupuncture, Herbology, Bodywork, Nutrition Therapy, Meditation, and Movement Therapeutics (such as Qi Gong and Tโ€™ai Chi.) It is also sometimes called TCMโ€”Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The philosophical roots of OM view the body, mind and spirit as interdependent realities that affect the vitality and flow of oneโ€™s life force, known as Qi (pronounced โ€œcheeโ€).  This Qi courses along fourteen main pathways of energy called Meridians.  When Qi is balanced and flowing correctly along the Meridians, the person experiences their most optimum health.  When the Qi is obstructed or deficient, the patient becomes symptomatic.

The healing practices of OM are administered by highly educated and licensed practitioners to harness and balance the Qi (energy) within the body by stimulating points along the Meridians.  With a combination of Acupuncture, Cupping, Massage, and Moxibusion, the patient is brought to balance and is relieved of symptoms.
